ZTE Engage Android Phone Mini Review##### UPDATE: I realized after a comment by ughUSERNAME that doing a long hold on the Home button opened Recently Used Tasks. I read the manual after the comment, something I overlooked earlier. Thanks for all the comments – keep ‘em coming! ###### ZTE Engage mini review, quick review. I’ll tell you right off the bat a) I don’t normally do smart phone reviews and b) I prefer my Huawei Mercury. The only reason I got a ZTE Engage is because its Cricket’s comparable model to the Huawei Mercury, which was my last phone. I dropped it and broke cracked the screen. So, this phone is no slacker, its got good features, and I hope you can get soemthing useful from this review. 1.4GHz Single CPU Processor 4″ WVGA touch-screen Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich 8-megapixel rear camera/CAMCORDER VGA Front-

Lol…if i press all over is the phone all over….funny review

The on-screen keyboard for texting and such? I have a problem with responsiveness. Sometimes direct, purposeful presses do nothing and accidental glances on the screen type out 2-3 characters.

I’m sure I need to get used to it, or possibly have to get rid of some apps.

That CRT? LOL… my wife’s ciomputer. My rig is waaaay different. Check out the link on my channel description, which isn’t even up-to-date. I have 3 flat screen CRT’s on my 2 PC’s.

The Engage is a decent smart phone, and if you have Cricket, I’d probably go Engage cuz u get Ice Cream Sandwich.

Will check out the app ifn I get a chance. Thanks for steppin’ up!

Good question, and tks for teaching me something about the phone while researching your answer. YES, it does offer Swype. From the User’s Manual (edited):

Your phone supports Android keyboard, Google voice typing and Swype. Android keyboard and Swype support multiple language inputs.

To change the settings of the input methods, on the home screen, touch the Menu key and then select System Settings > Language & input.. Look under Default and select an input option.

Hey, thanks for being heard! Are you talking about the same thing as ughUSERNAME’s comment? When you long-press the Home button? Yeah, I found that out after I opened my big mouth on the video, thanks! If you are talking about the Task Manager app in the ALL APPs area, my complaint there is its a pain to use App managers like that which differentiate between apps and processes. If I want to stop the alarm from going off (clock’s alarm is kinda buggy in android) I was 2 kill ASAP.

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

Thanks on both counts. I found out about the “recent apps” a couple of hours back and I looked at Advanced Task Managers in Google Play and can’t decide on one. Seen several authors, none I know. Thanks for watching and adding to the comment stream.

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

Yah really, right? “All Over” is a crazy button name. Maybe a Chinese guy at ZTE trying to translate “Kill All”?

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

Ok, so I was about to say their manual didn’t help, however it addresses 1 thing…the long hold on Home key is recently opened tasks. Ok, helpful. What about the task manager? That app could use some explaining! Tks for watching!

dalton131997 October 21, 2012 Reply

if you swipe your finger to left or right in the task manager thing it will kill the app you swiped

I think you should stick to halo instead of phone reviews my friend

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

That’s interesting, I felt they had the same sized keyboards. Just today its been really unresponsive several times when tryingf to type. I must have too many apps running or something. Ice Cream sandwich has some cool features I haven’t played with yet.

I don’t know, mostly everybody that I talked to that has the Mercury recommends the ZTE Engage. They all said if they had the chance to upgrade they would. I was torn between these two phones, not sure which to get so I just went with the newer one. I mean it has the 4.0 android system whereas the Mercury just has the 2.3 android system. I heard you can do way more with the 4.0 than the 2.3. Why would you want to go backwards instead of forward? You’re probably just not used to the Engage yet.

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

You are for sure right, I’m not used to it yet. You are also right about the Android versions, but I could not tell you the benefit of one over the other except that newer should be better. As I wrote this I JUST looked and the SOCIALCOMPARE site has a comparison chart of Android versions, I have some homework to do!

Thanks for the feedback and being heard!

bt thxnks for the review ive been waiting for one

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

LOL, I was of the same exact mindset, however this was a request. My vidz are normally about helping people DO something – get past a boss level in a game, see how to play through a campaign some really cool way (IMHO, anyways), open their cell phone because the manufacturer hid the microSD card under the battery, etc.

Thanks for dropping by and speaking your mind!

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

Glad you found it useful, shastahardwick. I don’t see the comment I thought I posted in reply, but the keyboard does cause me some issue -too touchy sometimes, unresponsive other times. What do you think about the keyboard?

RememberDaNamee October 21, 2012 Reply

you swipe left or right to get rid of the recent apps (;

shastahardwick October 21, 2012 Reply

thanks for the review. i have the same phone and i have my own qualms with it, so i’ve been wondering what others have thought about it too. curious though as to how to you feel about the keyboard?

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

Well, it is a ‘smart phone,’ … lol.

My “duh, I don’t know what I’m doing” comments are really *complaints* about the phone’s poor user-friendliness (2 of 5 stars IMHO). Switching from one Android phone to another should be a smoother process, and a big company like ZTE is capable of writing firmware/software that’s easy to learn without reading manuals. Thanks for dropping by and being heard!

To kill the apps on the big scrolly thing w boxes of the apps running just swipe the box to the left and it’ll close it. Also advanced task killer free is a good android task killer app. Thanks for the review

Glad you caught it 5231alex! And thanks for being heard!

Thanks for watching and commenting. I try to to be too serious.

shastahardwick October 21, 2012 Reply

I as well had the mercury before this phone (it pooped out on me) and i realize now that the keyboard on the engage is a lot bigger… so it takes some getting used to. at first i thought it was the phone’s fault that i couldn’t type worth a dang, then i realized that it’s probably just me.. at least so far that’s what I’m thinking haha.

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

That’s one of the issues I have with this phone, I see about 3 ways to kill apps, and its possible 2 of them kill apps and one is recent apps. Are you talking about 3m30s where I talk about killing apps?

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

Thanks a lot, really my first video review…first time on the vidcam, gotta get some good lighting! Thanks for commenting and watching.

youtubio66 October 21, 2012 Reply

A viewer talked me into the review and I’m glad. I’m giving the phone a chance now and liking it better.

I’ve been a Halo fan since Halo: Combat Evolved on the PC. Now I’ll have it loaded up on the Xbox 360 and bashing away in multiplayer.

For M00NLITE ANDR0ID and M00NLITEANDR0ID > “This gamertag is not valid”, how about you try adding Wildcard66Gamer. I don’t think my friends list is full yet.
